Before Metroidvania became a genre buzzword, Exhumed was already doing it — in first-person — on the Sega Saturn, no less. Known as Powerslave in North America, this atmospheric shooter from Lobotomy Software wasn’t just ahead of its time — it outclassed its contemporaries in both ambition and execution.
Set in a cursed, monster-infested version of ancient Egypt, you’re dropped into sprawling temples, crypts, and tombs filled with traps, power-ups, and secrets. But unlike your average FPS, Exhumed isn't a straight corridor blaster — it’s a non-linear adventure, packed with upgrades that unlock new areas, exploration-driven level design, and a sense of scale rarely seen in mid-‘90s shooters.
And here’s the kicker: the Saturn version is the best version. Period.
Thanks to Lobotomy’s custom SlaveDriver engine, it boasts smoother performance, superior lighting effects, and enhanced level layouts not found in the PlayStation or PC releases. It’s faster, tighter, and simply more complete — the Saturn version is the version fans and collectors revere.
With limited print runs, a fierce cult following, and increasing recognition as one of the Saturn’s greatest technical achievements, Exhumed has become a must-have title for any serious collector or FPS enthusiast.
